Why Your Refrigerator Stops Cooling: Common Causes and Fixes

A refrigerator that runs but will not cool almost always comes down to one of five things: dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, a worn door seal, a defrost system fault, or a failing compressor. Some are simple to check yourself. Others need a technician. Here is how to tell which is which before your groceries pay the price.

Check the Simple Causes First

Start with what you can see. Pull the fridge out and look at the condenser coils, usually at the back or underneath. Coils packed with dust cannot release heat, and the unit runs constantly without getting cold. A vacuum and a coil brush often fix this in ten minutes. Next, check the door seal. Close the door on a dollar bill; if it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is worn and warm air is leaking in. Both of these are worth ruling out before you assume the worst.

When the Problem Is Inside the System

If the coils and seal are fine, the cause is usually internal. A failed evaporator fan means cold air never circulates from the freezer to the fridge, so the freezer stays cold while the fridge turns warm. A defrost heater or defrost thermostat that has stopped cycling lets frost build up until airflow chokes off. These point to a specific part, and diagnosing them correctly takes a meter and some experience. Swapping parts by guesswork gets expensive fast, which is why we test the failed component before quoting.

The One to Take Seriously

If the fridge is silent, not humming at all, or the compressor is hot and clicking on and off, the sealed system or compressor may be failing. This is the most costly repair and the point where repair-versus-replace math matters most. As a rule, repair is usually worth it when the unit is under 10 years old and the fix costs less than half of a replacement.

What St. Louis Weather Adds to the Mix

Local conditions speed up two of these failures. Humid Missouri summers push refrigerators to run harder and wear door gaskets faster, and they raise the risk of condensation and frost problems. Winter cold snaps can freeze the water line feeding an ice maker or dispenser, which looks like a cooling fault but is not. A local technician sees these seasonal patterns and diagnoses them quickly.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • How long can food stay safe in a fridge that stopped cooling?

Roughly four hours if you keep the door closed. After that, discard perishables held above 40 degrees.

  • Can I fix a refrigerator that won't cool myself?

Coil cleaning and gasket checks are safe to do yourself. Fan, defrost, and compressor repairs involve electrical and sealed-system work best left to a technician.

  • Is it worth repairing an older refrigerator?

Usually yes when it is under 10 years old and the repair costs less than half of a new unit. A technician can give you an honest comparison.
